Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As we reach the five-week mark of Term 1, many students will be settling into the routines of high school life. For some, this transition has been smooth, while others may still be adjusting to new expectations, friendships, and academic challenges. At Rangitoto College, we understand that change can bring excitement as well as uncertainty, and we are here to support both students and families during this time.
Our Counselling Department consists of five full-time counsellors, all of whom are registered members of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC). We provide a safe, confidential space where students can talk about any concerns they may have—whether personal, social, or academic.
Students can book an appointment directly with us, and we also welcome parents reaching out if they are concerned about their child and believe counselling could be helpful. We understand that parents know their children best, and we are happy to discuss any concerns and offer guidance on how to best support them.
For many new students, high school brings greater independence, new friendships, and increased academic expectations. Some students thrive on these changes, while others may need more time and support. Here are some ways you can help your child adjust:
- Check In Regularly – Ask open-ended questions about their day, friendships, and workload. Encourage conversation without pressure.
- Encourage a Balanced Routine – Help them establish good study habits while ensuring they have time for rest, hobbies, and social activities.
- Support Social Connections – Encourage involvement in school clubs, sports, or cultural groups to help them build friendships and feel connected.
- Promote Self-Care – Sleep, nutrition, and physical activity all play key roles in emotional well-being and academic success.
- Reassure and Be Patient – Remind them that adjusting takes time and that it’s okay to ask for help when needed.SchoolTV
SchoolTV is an online platform with lots of useful advice and resources for parents on a number of issues that young people navigate. All parents of Rangitoto College can access SchoolTV via the website, the parent portal, or the school app. I draw your attention to a special report from last year on Transition to High school, which will be of particular interest to those who have recently joined the Rangitoto Community. You can access the special report by clicking HERE.
If you are concerned about how your child is coping with the transition to high school, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to provide support, whether through direct counselling for students or guidance for parents.
Thank you for your partnership in supporting your child’s well-being. We look forward to working with you to ensure a positive and successful year ahead.
Warm regards,
