Students from Rangitoto College have done amazingly well in the New Zealand Mathematical Olympiad this year. 17 students (compared to only 8 in 2023) made their way into the second round: Bonnie Scott, Gordon Peng, Stephanie Yang, Edward Xiao, Hugo Tan, Alston Huang, Gwang Ho Kim, Sylvia Yu, Sissi Chang, Alan Sun, Camellia Zhang, Daniel Gao, Jaylen Ling, John Cai, Elijah Tac, Leo Wang, and Larry Wu. All these students sat the three-hour NZMO Round 2 on the 30th of August and we had the best result ever this year—Edward Xiao won a gold medal, Alston Huang, Gwang Ho Kim, John Cai, Leo Wang, and Alan Sun won silver, and Hugo Tan won bronze, with Jaylen Ling and Larry Wu among the honourable-mention list. Four students from Rangitoto College, which is the largest number in recent years, are invited to the NZMOC Training Camp—Edward Xiao, Alston Huang, Gwang Ho Kim, and Leo Wang, with the hope of being selected to represent New Zealand in the International Mathematical Olympiad of 2025.
This success did not come easily. Throughout the year, students have worked hard in and out of school to prepare for this. Every Wednesday, the Rangitoto Mathematical Olympiad Club members meet in M19 to learn Mathematical Olympiad tactics. Besides, they have participated in a lot of Mathematical Olympiads and Math competitions to polish their skills.
In April, 70 students participated in the Inter-School Mathematical Olympiad, in which Rangitoto College won 4 gold, 3 silver, 13 bronze, and 8 honourable mentions, and as a result, Rangitoto College has the highest score among all the participating schools. This is the biggest success our school has achieved so far in the Math Olympiad. Leo Wang and John Cai won the first and second place in the Senior Division, with Alston Huang and Kyle Tac winning gold medals in the Junior Division. The three silver medalists are Eric Ni, Derek Song, and Elijah Tac.
In May, the Auckland Mathematical Olympiad took place at the University of Auckland City Campus. Orlando Aguilera, John Cai, Selina Ni, Derek Song, Alan Sun, Leo Wang Edward Xiao, Alston Huang, Gwang Ho Kim, Jayden Lin, Felix Luo, Eric Ni, Gordon Peng, Elijah Tac, and Kyle Tac represented Rangitoto College and Gwang Ho Kim won the 5th place.
Besides, in the afternoon of the first Monday of each month, there is an NZMO workshop in M19, hosted by Mr. Victor Dai. Students from Rangitoto College and nearby schools have participated in this each month for the past two years. Any student who is keen to learn some Mathematical Olympiad tactics is welcome to join.
