As families around the world prepare to celebrate the Christmas season by decorating their homes, singing carols, buying gifts, and planning feasts, often the joy and goodwill sentiments of Christmas can be lost due the commercial exploitation of this time of year. Many people see it as a joyous occasion to spend with family and friends, but for others it is viewed as a stressful and challenging time attributed by a combination of things such as financial pressures, relationship issues, and quite often, loneliness.

During the Christmas period, there is a huge increase in the number of calls to support organisations. Many of these callers are considered to be in a high-risk category and sadly, this is the ugly side to Christmas. Should you, or a loved one, ever feel that the pressure of Christmas becomes too much, it is important to seek help. Reach out to a trusted friend, talk to your doctor or counsellor, or phone one of the many support organisations available to you 24/7.

For our students and their families, as we reflect on this year, we celebrate the growth they have shown, not only in their learning, but also in their emotional intelligence, their individual gifts and talents, and, so importantly, their personal well-being. It has been inspiring to watch students push through challenges, embrace their individuality, and support each other along the way.

We also recognise that this year has not been without its difficulties. Many students have faced anxiety, uncertainty, and the pressures that come with school life. It is important for us to acknowledge the courage it takes to seek help and to remind everyone that challenges are part of the learning process. Whether it was through individual counselling, group therapy sessions, mentoring, or simply a conversation with a trusted teacher, each step toward growth is worth celebrating.

As we look ahead, we encourage students to take the time over the summer to rest, recharge, and reflect on their goals for the coming year. For students leaving us, we are excited to see where their future endeavours take them, whether that be continuing their education, entering the workforce, or pursuing other opportunities.

For those returning to us in 2025, we encourage you to think about your academic and personal goals for the next year. The summer can be a great time to explore new interests, volunteer, or prepare for any challenges that may come with the next school year. We remind all students that during term time our doors are always open, and we are here to help them with whatever counselling support they need.

SchoolTV has a special report from 2023 where Dr Michael Carr-Gregg gives some thoughts on Surviving Christmas that I include again for you to consider. To see this, click HERE.
