Our Rangitoto College EVolocity students competed in the Regional Race Day held at RNZAF Base Auckland in October. Students drove their karts through a series of challenging races consisting of drag racing, gymkhana, and endurance racing. These challenges put their design ideas to the test in the physical environment.

EVolocity is a nationwide competition, inviting secondary school teams to dive into the realm of electric vehicles. Teams are challenged to design, build, and race their own vehicles, with the opportunity to compete in two distinct classes: innovation and competition. In the innovation class, participants focus on specific aspects of vehicle design, while the competition class encourages a comprehensive approach to creating the fastest, most striking, and highest-performing car possible.

In 2024, students have collaborated with industry leaders McMullen and Wing to explore the potential of composite materials. This partnership has provided valuable insights into how composite design can significantly enhance strength while reducing weight. As a result, Rangitoto College students have developed a carbon fibre floor panel during a workshop facilitated by McMullen and Wing. We would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to the staff at McMullen and Wing for helping to make these innovations possible.

2025 will see a new group of senior Materials Technology students undertake the EVolocity challenge to bring even further technological advancements to the forefront of electric vehicle innovation and design.
