Rangitoto College recently celebrated a major milestone with its first-ever Peace Week, from August 5 to August 10, 2024. The week focused on the theme “Whakanuia Rongonui mā, Teitei mā, te Hunga i Hohou i te Rongo,” which translates to “Celebrating Peace Icons – Past, Present, and Future.” This theme was especially meaningful as the school remembered the tragic events of August 6, 1945, when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, marking the beginning of nuclear warfare and its devastating aftermath.
Throughout the week, students and staff participated in a series of well-planned activities aimed at promoting peace and encouraging contemplation on the historical significance of the Hiroshima bombing. Each day had a distinct focus, allowing participants to explore the theme of peace from various perspectives.
The highlight of the week was on Tuesday, featuring a talk with Aki and Takako, two survivors of the Hiroshima bombing, who shared their harrowing experiences. Their firsthand stories provided students with a personal insight into the unimaginable horrors of nuclear warfare, emphasising the importance of working towards a world free of such weapons. Painting paper plates featuring peace icons, a quiz, and paper crane folding were also included.
Overall, Peace Week at Rangitoto College was more than just a series of activities; it was an immersive educational journey that aimed to instil core values such as empathy and respect in the student body.
