BACKCircus Workshop with Dust Palace
Our Year 13 Dance students were lucky to attend a workshop at the beginning of Term 2 with the professional circus company Dust Palace! This is the first year that a circus component has been included in the curriculum at Rangitoto College and our students had a fantastic day at the circus hub in Penrose. Students had the opportunity to trial both aerial and floor-based circus apparatus and get a taste of what being a professional circus performer is like.
Royal New Zealand Ballet showing of Romeo & Juliet
A fantastic outing to the theatre saw our senior Dance students view the latest creation by the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Romeo & Juliet! Shakespeare’s greatest love story is told in a passionate way by renowned choreographer, Andrea Schermoly. Exquisite sets and costumes by Academy Award-winning designer James Acheson, bring to life all the splendour and seduction of Renaissance Verona, swept up in Prokofiev’s exhilarating, sensuous score.
Footnote Dance Company Workshop
Footnote Dance Company is a contemporary dance company based in Wellington, which we had the pleasure of hosting at Rangitoto College for a workshop. The company dancers took our senior students through many different tasking exercises which all help to promote critical thinking in composition and choreography. A fantastic experience for all of our students where skills taught at these workshops are interwoven into their curriculum assessments.
National Dance Challenge Competition
All co-curricular dance groups competed at the National Dance Challenge competition held in June. This included Magnum Company, Magnum Troupe, Overture Ballet Troupe, and Hip Hop Mega crew.
Schools from all over the upper North Island competed in this wonderful competition and our students did exceptionally well.

- Runner up Student Choreography award to Felicia Zhang, Jennifer Liu, and Sophia Snelgrove for Hip Hop Mega crew
- Overture Ballet Troupe, first in Lyrical division
- Winner of the Student Choreography award to Marissa Zhou and Lyn Lin for Overture Ballet Troupe
- Overture Ballet Troupe won the Secondary School Dance Team of the Year winner
- Overture Ballet Troupe also won the Overall School Winner for 2023!
