Term 1 has been a busy but exciting term for tennis at Rangitoto College, with both tennis training and competitive tennis taking place.

For the first time in a number of years we had a Premier Boys tennis team play in the College Sport Premier Boys competition.

In the first round of matches, the team had a 2-2 draw against Auckland Grammar, a huge 6-0 win against Botany Downs and a 5-1 loss to Westlake.

The team then played Macleans in the quarter finals, coming away with a 4-2 win and putting them through to the semi-finals. The semi-final was definitely the toughest and closest match of the season, with the team facing Botany Downs for a second time and winning 7-6 in a set count-back.

Finals day was played at Scarbro Tennis Centre and was an awesome experience for our players. Although we didn’t get the win, it was a fantastic day of competitive tennis and all five players can be extremely proud of their achievement this season – Premier Boys Runners Up!

Well done to Nicolas Ouwehand (captain), Nathan Agethen, Chan Min, Santiago Gonzalez and Michael Yang on a very successful season.

All five boys, plus George Zhang, Lina and Lora Kim also competed in the College Sport Auckland Tennis Champs of Champs. This two-day tournament is where the best school tennis players across Auckland come together and play off for the Auckland Champs title.

Huge congratulations to Chan Min, who won the Senior Boys Singles title, beating Westlake in his semi-final and Kings College in the final. Nicolas Ouwehand and Nathan Agethen also made it through to the semi-finals for Senior Boys Doubles. An outstanding result!

Another success this term has been the increase in students involved in our morning tennis trainings, run by coach Gavin Hill. With boys’ sessions on a Tuesday and girls’ sessions on a Thursday, we have seen consistent attendance from both groups, with 25-30 students present each session.

We look forward to continued participation, development, and achievement for tennis in Term 4.
