In July, we took two teams to compete in the STANZA National Spanish Debate competition which was held this year at Auckland Grammar School. It was a great day with strong competition and interesting topics for the teams to debate.
The Year 11 team (Lanny Adison, Layla Clarke, Kenzie Longmuir, and Aaron McMillan) competed in the junior category and while they lost their first round debate, they won in their second round.
The Year 13 team (Bhanavi Micarelli, Grace Munro, Ella Roberts, and Jonathan Jones) competed in the open category and had a very successful day winning all of their debates and ultimately coming away from the day having placed first in the category!
It was a very fun day for both teams and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of using the Spanish they have learnt in class in a new challenging environment that also pushed them to use critical thinking and teamwork. The atmosphere of the day was very supportive and vibrant, and it was cool for the students to get the opportunity to communicate with others in another language!
