This year we took 65 of our extra-curricular dancers to the Dance NZ Made regional competition held at the Trusts Arena. This included students in Hip Hop Mega Crew, Ballet Troupe, Magnum Troupe, and Magnum Company. Our students had a fantastic day in workshops and rehearsals prior to the competition in the evening. We also had dancers entered in the solo performance division, where they achieved fantastic success and were invited to compete at the Nationals event.
Year 9 division – 1st runner-up Alicia Zhou
Year 10 division – 2nd runner-up Jorja Boese
Year 11 division – 1st place Summer Hawkins, 2nd runner-up Melody Ullrich
Year 12 division – 1st runner-up Kiera Hawkins
Year 13 division – 1st runner-up Amelia Ullrich
Magnum Senior Troupe showcased a piece titled Dream Girl Evil which was choreographed by two very talented student leaders Kiera Hawkins and Amelia Ullrich. They placed first in the Years 11-13 category and took out 2nd runner-up. Mi Amor, the most recent work from Magnum Junior Troupe, was lucky enough to receive first place overall in the Year 9-10 division. Our Magnum Combined Troupe took out the overall winner award for the whole competition with their piece Bailar. This means that all three pieces qualify for Dance NZ Made Nationals being held in September, in Palmerston North. This will be the first time that our Dance Department will go on a national’s trip and we wish our dancers every success on their trip.
A special mention to student choreographers Amelia Ullrich, Kiera Hawkins, Suao Asada, Nicole Aley, Jorja Boese, and Mila Reid for receiving outstanding choreography awards alongside our dance teachers Renee Richards and Jennifer Maxwell.
