Since 2014 there has been a steady increase in deaths due to car crashes involving young drivers with primary responsibility. Road trauma is one of the greatest causes of harm to 16 to 24 year olds in New Zealand. SADD recognises this issue and works actively to empower young drivers to make safer decisions on the road and contribute to injury prevention initiatives.
This student-led programme at Rangitoto College aspires for all young people to have an enjoyable driver’s licence experience by making right choices on the road whilst driving in safe vehicles. Throughout the year there are various student organised events such as engaging driver’s licence workshops and car wash fundraisers that raise awareness and promote for this cause by encouraging students to be defensive drivers. There is also an opportunity to represent SADD nationally through the National Leadership Programme (NLP) providing the chance to lead peers nationwide and give back to the community.
SADD is a great organisation to support as there are multiple volunteering and service opportunities which are beneficial for university applications and CVs.
Year 9 and Year 10 students are required to complete/participate in a minimum of 3 events throughout the year for SADD to have this activity added onto their student profile.
