Listen to our Student Leaders and Tū Rangatira Students.

Enthusiastic staff members foster student leadership and development through a great variety of cultural activities, actively engaging students in expanding their social and personal cultural awareness and leadership skills.

The Te Reo Māori and Tikanga learning pathways at Rangitoto College focus on building our learners’ confidence, competence and connections. This is seen through our kapa haka – Te Kiko o Rangitoto, through community celebrations such as Matariki, and our ever growing academic pathways – Te Reo, Carving and Māori Performing Arts.

Student led groups and clubs provide rich engagement opportunities to their fellow students. We have over 60 clubs and 33 service opportunities that celebrate international arts events, champion charitable causes and provide avenues for students to explore their passions and foster friendships.

Students serve and make positive contributions that address the needs of their wider community. Needs such as restoring native ecology networks, pest and predator prevention, providing Service to our neighbouring Knightsbridge Retirement Village, recycling chip packets to be manipulated into thermal blankets or support for our wider community through our Community Garden. Students’ efforts are recognised via both the Rangitoto Summit Diploma and the Student Volunteer Army. In 2023, students provided over 11,000 hours of service to our community

Students are also able to participate in many student leadership opportunities throughout the school. The college has a strong student leadership programme that offers students leadership growth opportunities in many areas of responsibility within our student leadership teams. These teams are led by our Year 13 Student Leaders and are comprised of teams from Year 10 through to Year 12 and lead in areas such as the Arts, Sports, Pastoral Care, Community and Environment and Culture and Globalisation. Specialist Student Leadership teams lead their peers in key cultural areas providing leadership growth and engagement opportunities for our Chinese, Korean, Māori and Pasifika communities.

Pīpīwharauroa Festival 2024

Our kura was delighted with our annual Pīpīwharauroa Festival on a gorgeous sunny afternoon. The event was an incredible culmination of a nine-week learning journey of mātauranga Māori. Our community came together in honouring mātauranga Maori with kapa haka, food stalls, and an array of cultural stores to recognise our school’s diversity. We welcomed our Kāhui Ako schools, @aucklandmuseum, and @whakaatamaori to enjoy a variety of performances, art, and market stalls.

A huge thank you to our sponsors @newworldnz , @asbbank, and @paramountservicesnz who helped in making this day possible. And finally, thank you to all of the students who performed and made the day the wonder that it was. See you all next year! We look forward to welcoming our Kāhui Ako community back in 2025!

ASB Polyfest

We are extremely proud of our students’ contributions to the diversity of Rangitoto College.

Our students’ outstanding performances at the ASB Polyfest are truly memorable.

In 2024, Rangitoto College was represented by our amazing Chinese and Korean cultural teams on the diversity stage.  It was an amazing experience with our Chinese Team performing a traditional sleeve dance and our Korean Team a fan dance.  The students performed exceptionally well and it was an amazing experience.

In 2021, our students sang a beautiful version of Te Kiko O Rangitoto in the Waita Tira.  They also shared inspiring contributions to Full Bracket, Haka, Mōteatea, Poi, Waiata-ā-ringa, Whakaeke and Whakawātea.

Chinese dance starts 4:14:18 and ends 4:21:40

Korean dance starts 4:35:40 and ends 4:43:30

Student Testimonial

Cuba Rihari

Kia Ora, my name is Cuba Rihari and my experience so far at Rangitoto College as a Year 13 student of Māori and Pasifika descent has been extremely enjoyable. I have been able to connect with many other students and teachers throughout my time at this school and I have enjoyed every moment of it.

In Year 9 and 10 I had the opportunity of joining the Cultural Committee which was amazing because it helped me develop my leadership skills and also helped me step out of my comfort zone. This year, I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Māori and Pasifika Leadership Team and the Tū Rangatira Tutor class where we base our goals around Māori and Pasifika students to help strengthen our community. I am also in the school’s Kapa Haka group where we train hard for lots of performances and events which contributes to the school’s success.

These cultural groups have allowed me to deepen my connection with my peers and my teachers because they have taught me strong values such as pride, integrity and respect within the school. Also in Year 9 and 10, I was involved in a wide range of sporting activities such as the Sports Performance Academy, the junior premier volleyball team, and now this year I had the privilege to get accepted into the senior premier volleyball team and the 1st XV rugby team. I am extremely passionate about volleyball and I know that if I work hard enough I can achieve my dream scholarship to the States.

This is truly a special school because it works hard to ensure that each and every student gets great opportunities to allow them to also pursue their goals in life as well.

These have been extremely great opportunities for me because I believe that they have allowed me to realise the importance of my self-identity through the help and guidance of others.
