The Senior Rugby Training Squad have had a very successful Term 1 in 2022. There have been 20 training sessions where 40+ rugby players were put through vigorous activities before trialling against each other. From this trial, a 1st and 2nd XV emerged. Many of the 2nd XV players have continued to train with the 1st XV and trial with the 1st XV against other schools. Overall, there has been a positive uptake of senior rugby in the school.
Our youth rugby boys and girls have been involved in a 3-week pre-season programme where they have been working on different skills as well as making new connections within our rugby community. Our current team coaches along with special guest coaches have provided great insight into different aspects of the game. Brett Craise, who is currently working with NZ Sevens and Secondary School teams, provided the group with an opportunity to improve their attacking skills. We then had Slade Mcfarlan, an ex-student and former NZ Maori rugby representative, explain the finer details of holding a strong body position. Harbour Rugby then led a session on breakdown decision making.
We have made an excellent start to rugby in 2022. If you want to be a part of the Rangitoto rugby waka get in touch with Teacher in Charge Ryan Borthwick at ryan.borthwick@rangitoto.school.nz.
