Our 2021 Head Students have led excellently during an interesting year. Below they reflect on their time at Rangitoto College

As we come to the end of Year 13, we embrace all the shared memories that made our schooling career. We become the small fish in a big pond once again as we start our lives in the big world. We have embraced challenges and demonstrated resilience through some pandemic-ridden years. Our achievements in sports and academics have shaped us into the exceptional young people we are today and none of it would’ve been possible without the care and support of our teachers, deans, and friends. The effort you put into teaching us all is deeply appreciated and we honour the work that you do. As a Head Student, it has been a privilege and a pleasure to see how we’ve grown over the last five years at Rangitoto College, and it has been an honour being a part of the class of 2021. Always remember that you have everything you need to be successful within you. I wish you all the best and hope to see you all in the future, Alicia.

As my time at Rangitoto College comes to an end, I want to say thank you to everyone that has helped me on my journey. I am forever grateful to each and everyone one of you—family, friends, and teachers alike. This year was tough for all of us so congrats to everyone that has made it to the end of the year through lockdowns and online learning. It was difficult but the resilience that we showed proves that nothing can get in the way of us doing great things in the future. I have so many memories from these five years that I will never forget and many friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Good luck to everyone in any future endeavours that you may have. Work hard, and continue to be the great people that I have come to know over the last five years.

When I attempt to recall the past five years collectively, they come in blurry flashes that are difficult to fathom. In the far future, I will not remember the details of the events that unfolded day after day in this place, but I’ll always remember the feeling that was eminent throughout this part of my life—joy. One that precedes the beginning, only to be fully realized now that I’m here at the end.

This is a journey that I am grateful to have undertaken and honoured to have spent this time alongside such amazing people—teachers who show the extent of the belief they have in their students by fully committing themselves to the art of teaching every moment they teach. I am inspired by your dedication and care. I have met incredible friends who have helped me step through every step. Should the future unveil endeavours that resonate with you, I hope that you’ll have the same courage you’ve taught me, and reach for the potential that is yours.

We tentatively walked through the gates of Rangitoto College five years ago. Now, we walk out these gates for the last time, our hearts a little crumpled with sentiment, alongside the lifelong friends we have made during our time here. Reflecting upon the years, I am filled with so much gratitude for all the cherished memories and experiences that Rangitoto College has gifted me. It has been my honour to have learned such valuable lessons from a group of talented and resilient individuals that will resonate with me for the rest of my life—thank you for being part of my story and allowing me to be a part of yours. Additionally, I will never forget my gratitude for our teachers who have unconditionally supported us in facilitating our academic growth and also the development of our personal values. Congratulations to the class of 2021 for not only overcoming but conquering the challenging past years. Keep being the positive and motivated students you are. Ngā mihi nui, noho ora mai.
