This term the Year 13 History students travelled down to the Waikato in order to visit sites of historical significance from the 1863 Waikato War and Kīngitanga. Students have been studying the invasion and looking at the causes and consequences for the occupation of the Waikato.

Students started the trip at Howick Historical Village where they learnt about life in Auckland during the 1800s. They then travelled down to Te Awamutu, stopping at Meremere and Rangiriri to study the remains of the battle sites. The following day, students met up with a team of historians at Te Awamutu Museum who took us on a tour of Rangiaowhia’s historic church and Rewi’s Last Stand at O-Rākau.

It was a great trip and a valuable learning experience for Year 13 History students.
