Dear Parents and Guardians,
In light of the recent Netflix series Adolescence, which has sparked conversations around the challenges young people face in the digital world, the counselling team here at Rangitoto College would like to take this opportunity to share some practical advice on cybersafety.
The digital landscape offers incredible opportunities for learning and connection, but it also presents potential risks. As parents, it’s essential to maintain open communication with your children about their online experiences, promote healthy digital habits, and be proactive in guiding them towards safe and responsible internet use.
Some things to consider in helping young people to navigate cyberspace safely are:
- Encourage Open Dialogue: Talk to your children regularly about their online activities, friendships, and experiences. Let them know they can come to you without fear of judgment or punishment if they encounter something concerning.
- Set Boundaries and Guidelines: Establish clear expectations around internet use, including appropriate times and places for devices, as well as guidelines for social media interactions.
- Educate About Online Risks: Discuss topics such as privacy, cyberbullying, digital footprints, and the permanence of online content. Empower your children to make safe choices and report anything that makes them feel uncomfortable.
- Stay Informed: Keep up to date with the platforms and apps your child uses. Understanding how these tools work will help you provide relevant guidance and support.
- Model Positive Digital Behaviour: Demonstrate balanced technology use and respectful online communication, setting an example your children can follow.
To assist you further, we highly recommend watching the latest SchoolTV report on Cybersafety, which offers a wealth of practical advice from leading child and adolescent psychologists and experts in the field of cybersafety, addressing many common questions from parents. I also draw your attention to another SchoolTV special report, on Social Media and Comparison Culture, which further addresses the issues raised in the Netflix series, Adolescence, and the importance of cybersafety.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students’ wellbeing, both online and offline. If you have any questions or want to seek support for your child, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Counselling Department at Rangitoto College.
