BACKAt the start of March, the Year 12 Geography cohort undertook our annual trip to the Tongariro National Park. The main purpose of the trip was to collect data for their recent research project on altitudinal zonation in the national park.
Unfortunately, high winds prevented the group from hiking the Tongariro Crossing, a yearly highlight for the geography department. However, the group still managed to get out and explore the area by doing smaller walks in the volcanic center including the Silica Rapids and Taranaki Falls tracks. Students surveyed vegetation density in a range of environments around the volcanic zone, including a trip out to the Rangipo desert on the eastern side of Mount Ruapehu.
Despite missing the Tongariro Crossing walk students and teachers all had a great experience which they will certainly remember in years to come.
