I have always gravitated to the many different facets of performing arts and I can safely say that the support and opportunities Rangitoto College has provided me has allowed me to expand my performance ability to heights that I wouldn’t have dreamed of achieving otherwise. In addition, my ventures in acting, music, dance and directing at the college have not only increased my skills as an artist but also provided me with lifelong connections and memories.
In Year 9 I took the school’s rock programme. This not only increased my singing ability but also introduced me to many talented people, and before the end of the year my band, Snails Aren’t Bugs, was formed. We have performed at Smokefree Rockquest three times, making it to the North Shore finals in Year 10. We plan to continue partaking in Rockquest till Year 13. We have also performed at the school’s Rocky Road concert which I have MCed every year since Year 9.
I have also been heavily involved in the drama curriculum since year nine. My first drama performance with Rangitoto College was in Year 10 when I was part of the acting ensemble in Shrek the musical. The same year I starred in the drama company’s junior production of Puffs, as the main character Wayne Hopkins. I was also part of the school’s theatre sports team which placed second in Auckland. This year I wrote and directed a short play inspired by Roald Dahl’s book, Henry Sugar, in the school’s theatre festival. I was also involved in Rangitoto production of Doctor Faustus and have very recently concluded the shows of Harry Maxwell and Sammy Hooks original musical Afloat which was produced in collaboration with Rangitoto College. I have thoroughly enjoyed these experiences and I believe they have been an integral part in making me who I am today.

I have been a singer all my life, but my abilities increased rapidly when I got involved in the school choirs. In year 10 I joined the school’s non auditioned lower voices choir, Cambiata, and performed at The Big Sing. This increased my ability to read music and taught me how to sing as a part of an ensemble. This year I was accepted into the school’s auditioned mixed voices choir, The Fundamentals, and later this year we will be going to Rotorua to perform in the Big Sing’s Cadenza concert.

After college I would like to fully explore a future in performing arts either being on stage or producing behind the scenes. One of my biggest dreams is to be able to write and direct my own film, and who knows, maybe play James Bond along the way. Mostly I hope to be able to live a sustainable and fulfilling life by working in the arts. Rangitoto College has been an integral part of my journey in becoming the actor and man I am today, and I wholeheartedly believe that nowhere else could have provided the opportunities and support that this school has.

My passion and love for performing, especially Musical Theatre, developed from an early age and has only grown stronger since my time here at Rangitoto College.

For the past two years, I have been a member of the student’s Arts Leadership Team. This has been a very rewarding experience as I have been able to take a leadership role in an area of the school that I care deeply for. As of late, we have collaborated in organising events such as Karaoke and Lip Sync Battles at lunchtimes, which have been immensely popular. We are working towards more events that celebrate and showcase the different areas of the Arts within the college.

So far, in my four years at Rangitoto College, I have been involved in numerous aspects of the Arts, more specifically in the Drama and Music department. In my junior years, I was a member of two of the school choirs, specifically one previously named Massa de Voce, a non-auditioned choir, as well as Serenata, an auditioned female voice choir. In 2021, we, Serenata, were selected to compete in the Big Sing National Finale in Christchurch, however this was sadly cancelled due to COVID-19. These choirs were welcoming, and very educational, and fun, nevertheless. I especially enjoyed the annual Choir camps. I have also been a keen student in the school’s music tuition programme, taking vocal lessons. I have found that these lessons have furthered my progress both in school, and in activities outside, in community theatre.

Additionally, I have been partaking in the Drama curriculum since Year 9. I feel passionately about Drama and was very excited at the prospect of furthering my passion in a school environment with experienced teachers. I have been involved in extracurricular Drama within the school as well. I was in the 2023 production of Shrek the Musical, and played the Narrator in the Drama Company’s play, Puffs. For this role, I was nominated for an Auckland Live Showdown Award, the Best Lead in a Play, out of high schools within the Auckland area. It was great and very enjoyable being able to put on full-scale productions.

Having studied Drama at school for four years, as well as my involvement in theatre outside of school, I felt confident enough to audition for the Kiwi All-Stars. The Kiwi All-Stars are a selected group of teenage musical theatre performers from across the country that were chosen to compete and take part alongside some Australians in the Junior Theatre Festival in Sacramento in the United States, earlier this year. I was able to travel to New York City, meet and work with Broadway performers, composers, musicians, and producers. We ended up winning an award for the Most Outstanding Performance. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I am grateful that I spend a lot of time in a supportive environment that allows me to explore and develop my individual skills.

As I still have another year of high school education ahead of me, I am unsure of what the future holds but I am looking forward to making the most of the many Performing Art opportunities that College provides in my final year.
